Yingge features crystal glazed ceramics

Taipei County’s Yingge Ceramics Museum in Yingge Township, the ceramics capital of Taiwan, recently kicked off an exhibition of crystal glaze items at its B1 ceramics gallery as part of the Yingge Ceramics Brand Project.

The 22 selected items on display feature distinctive patterns of crystal flowers and showcase a certain eternal beauty.

Yu Jan-chi, director of the museum, stated that the museum has held this type of project for three consecutive years in an effort to create a brand name for Yingge ceramics. The first two years focused on rouge red and blue glazes, respectively, with this year's theme being crystal glaze.

All of these types of glazes reflect special ceramic techniques that have helped make a name for Yingge ceramics. Yu commented that ceramic artists and factories in Yingge began firing crystal glazed items in the 1980s. In the 1990s, there were still over 50 makers of ceramics who were produced crystal glazed items, and many of these kilns are still playing a role in the prosperity of Yingge's ceramics industry today.

Among the ceramic artists with items selected for this year's exhibit are Peng Wen-xiung, Li Cun-ren, Hu Guo-dong and Liu Wu. Each artist has created a unique style of crystal glaze, and has integrated a variety of media, while still maintaining a traditional, graceful feel.

Li Cun-ren's "Butterflies in Love Cup and Cover" exhibits a mixture of styles. A deep colored crystal glaze decorates the cup, which features a clear glass handle and knob. The item could be used as a decoration or as a gift. Meanwhile, Peng Wen-xiung's "Dawn" vase has a crystal glaze meant to express good fortune.
