Taipei, Penghu to host ROC anniversary celebrations

Events marking the ROC’s 99th anniversary will be held in Taipei and Penghu, according to Wang Jing-pyng, co-deputy chairman of the Preparatory Committee for the Centenary Celebrations July 28.

Wang, who is also president of the Legislative Yuan, said a parade is scheduled for Taipei on the afternoon of Double Tenth National Day, while a party is planned for Penghu. Later in the evening, a fireworks show will be staged on the banks of the Danshui River in Taipei County.

“This is the first time a National Day event will be held on one of Taiwan’s outlying islands,” Wang said.

Emile Chih-jen Sheng, minister of the Cabinet-level Council for Cultural Affairs, and CEO of the ROC Centenary Foundation, said this is also the first time for the public and private sectors to join in staging a National Day parade.

Beginning around 2 p.m. at National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Sheng said the parade will feature acrobatic troupes, bands, cheerleaders and a convoy of vehicles emblazoned with corporate sponsorship. Participants will pass along Renai Road before making their way to National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.

This year’s celebrations are expected to encompass 15 main events, with a host of support of activities organized by the private sector and central and local governments. (JSM)
