Taiwan responds to ECCT position papers

The ROC government is making a number of regulatory changes in response to position papers by the European Chamber of Commerce Taipei calling for a better business environment in Taiwan, according to the Council for Economic Planning and Development April 11.

A total of 207 suggestions were proposed in October in the ECCT’s 2011-2012 Position Papers. The CEPD has since reviewed the issues and forwarded each one to the responsible ministry and agency.

Officials from the CEPD said significant progress has been made in eliminating double testing of high-voltage equipment, one of the problems identified by the ECCT. Standards for old and new equipment have also been unified.

The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration has been reviewing regulations regarding medicinal cosmetics, in response to calls that the review period for such products be shortened.

Vague wording in the Patent Act has now been clarified, officials said. The next step will be to make further amendments to the act in order to enhance the protection of patent owners.

In addition, fund managers in Taiwan will be allowed to serve as investment advisors for foreign institutional investors or offshore funds, the CEPD said.

It added the Financial Supervisory Commission will finalize the measure in six months.

According to the CEPD, 66 problems raised by the ECCT have already been addressed. Officials are confident that the government will soon be able to give satisfactory answers to 84 more questions brought to its attention by the ECCT. (HZW)
