Taiwan has been left off the U.S. Trade Representative’s Special 301 Watch List for the fourth consecutive year, a sign that the island’s efforts to protect intellectual property rights are receiving international recognition. A total of 13 economies, including mainland China, were added to this year’s list released April 30.
ROC President Ma Ying-jeou will not deviate from his three-noes policy during his second four-year term, Presidential Office spokesman Fan Chiang Tai-chi said April 30. The policy refers to “no declaration of independence by Taiwan, no unification with mainland China and no use of military force to resolve cross-strait differences.”
Taiwan ranked sixth globally in terms of growth in real estate prices between the fourth quarter of 2006 and the final quarter of 2011, according to a recent report broadcast on the U.S. cable television business news channel CNBC. Average growth in Taiwan for the period was 30.1 percent, the report said. Placing first and second were mainland China and Hong Kong.
New Taipei City third-year junior high school student Chang Lai-ho received a perfect score on the recent American Invitational Mathematics Examination, becoming the first Taiwanese student to accomplish the feat in 12 years, the Nine Nine Cultural and Educational Foundation announced April 30. This year, 4,640 students from around the world took part in the test, with five getting perfect scores. (SB-HZW)
