The ROC Presidential Office website has begun showing two-minute video clips featuring President Ma Ying-jeou and his interactions and conversations with ordinary people around Taiwan. The first series of clips documents the president’s second-term inaugural ceremony held May 20.
The recent inspection tour to the U.S. by a team of agricultural experts has been effective in helping safeguard the health of the nation’s citizens, the Council of Agriculture said May 31 in response to queries by lawmakers. The slaughterhouses that the experts visited account for more than 63 percent of all beef products exported to Taiwan, the COA said.
Taiwan placed seventh overall in the 2012 global competitive rankings released May 31 by the Switzerland-based International Institute for Management and Development. Taiwan dropped one spot from last year’s rankings, due mainly to the domestic economy’s less than stellar performance. Council for Economic Planning and Development Minister Yiin Chii-ming said Taiwan needs to expand the range of industries that fuel the nation’s exports and diversify its markets abroad to reduce economic risk.
The National Immigration Agency held an anti-human trafficking forum May 31, inviting immigration officials from 12 neighboring countries to attend. Joe Parker, an assistant regional security official at the American Institute in Taiwan, delivered a speech on his experiences in combating human trafficking and assisting victims. (SB)
