Taiwan protests Japan lawmakers’ Diaoyutai visit

Taipei has expressed serious concern to Tokyo regarding a recent visit by Japanese lawmakers to the waters off the Diaoyutai Archipelago, the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs said June 11.

It also firmly reiterated to the Japanese government the ROC’s sovereignty over the island chain, according to the MOFA.

The ministry said it instructed the ROC representative office in Japan to relay the message to Tokyo June 7.

“The Diaoyutais are an integral part of ROC territory, and the government opposes any attempts to infringe on the nation’s sovereignty over the archipelago through words or deeds,” the ministry said.

It urged Japanese authorities not to take any inappropriate and unilateral actions that might have a negative impact on friendly relations between the two countries.

The Diaoyutais, known as the Senkakus in Japan, are an uninhabited island group located roughly 102 nautical miles northeast of Taiwan proper. (SB)
