The ROC Environmental Protection Administration said June 1 that the maximum allowable level of sulfide in diesel was lowered to 10 parts per million July 1, 2011. The EPA made the remarks after it was reported in the local press that the International Agency for Research on Cancer is now classifying exhaust from diesel-powered vehicles as a carcinogenic substance that increases the risk of lung cancer in humans.
Thomas Hou, ROC representative to the Dominican Republic, paid a visit to Dominican President-elect Danilo Medina June 11 to congratulate him on his presidential election victory. Medina won the Caribbean island nation’s presidential poll May 20 by garnering 51.21 percent of the vote. His inauguration is slated for Aug. 16.
Taiwan-born pitchers Wang Chien-ming and Chen Wei-yin both earned U.S. Major League victories in their respective starts June 12. Wang led the Washington Nationals past the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 to pick up his first win as a starter since returning from a hamstring injury, while Chen guided the Baltimore Orioles to an 8-6 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates, grabbing his sixth win of the year in the process. It marked the first time a pair of Taiwanese starters earned victories on the same day since Wang, then with the Yankees, and L.A. Dodgers hurler Kuo Hong-chih accomplished the feat June 13, 2007.
Statistics reveal that climate change has led to an increasing frequency of natural disasters worldwide, with 820 such calamities occurring during 2011, including 240 disasters in Asia, the second most globally, Financial Supervisory Commission Deputy Minister Wu Tang-chieh said June 13. He added that the question of how to include disaster insurance in the government’s overall natural disaster risk planning is an important issue that needs to be addressed. (SB)
