Taiwan banks’ total profits for 2012 are forecast to top last year’s record earnings of NT$200.01 billion (US$6.7 billion), the Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance said June 20. The Taiwan Index of Banking Earning Condition stood at 98.99 for the second quarter of this year, up from 97.89 for the first quarter of 2012, while the TAIBEC for the third and fourth quarters is expected to reach 98.33 and 100.88, respectively, according to the academy.
Taiwan’s export orders totaled US$36.47 billion for May, 3.04 percent lower than the same period last year, the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced June 20. It marks the third consecutive month of annual declines, indicating that world economic recovery momentum remains weak. The largest drop in export orders for the month was for transport equipment, down US$470 million, or 32.1 percent, year on year, according to the ministry.
The Formosa 5 supercomputer system developed by Taiwan’s National Center for High-Performance Computing has been ranked 232nd globally on the top 500 list announced during this year’s International Supercomputing Conference. The Formosa 4 was ranked 234th in the world at last year’s conference.
A delegation of six high-level representatives of Japan’s Mizuho Corporate Bank Ltd. visited the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Department of Investment Services June 20 to discuss enhancing cooperation in the promotion of Taiwan-Japan bilateral relations and jointly investing in India, mainland China and Myanmar.
