Taiwan’s ICAO ad campaign takes off

The ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched an advertising campaign in support of the nation’s bid for meaningful participation in the U.N.-affiliated International Civil Aviation Organization.

“We must earn the backing of the international community to have a place in the ICAO,” said Chow Chin-fa, deputy director-general of MOFA’s Department of International Organizations, July 17 at a news conference in Taipei City.

“This can be achieved following the same model that delivered World Health Assembly observer status for Taiwan in 2008,” he added.

The ROC government has been striving to take part in ICAO meetings and activities as an observer since 2009. This has proven challenging as the nation is not a U.N. member, a key requirement for upgraded participation.

According to Chow, Taiwan is a major air transportation hub in East Asia with high cross-strait and international traffic volumes.

“There is no question that we can be a valuable and constructive partner of the ICAO and assist in the safe and sustainable development of international aviation and integrated universal navigation system.”

“ICAO for All,” which is jointly overseen by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, comprises 5,000 Chinese and English language brochures, as well as luggage tags available in all MOFA overseas offices.
