Taiwan gears up for SME meeting at APEC

The ROC delegation for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum meeting on small and medium enterprises departed Taiwan Aug. 1 for St. Petersburg, Russia, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Led by Deputy MOEA Minister Cho Shih-chao, the 13-member group comprises senior officials and business representatives. It is expected to share Taiwan’s considerable experience in promoting SMEs at the one-day event beginning Aug. 3.

This year’s meeting, which focuses on expanding SME cooperation for innovative growth, will address issues such as globalizing operations, fostering startups and supporting young entrepreneurs.

During the meeting, Cho plans to propose an initiative promoting new business ventures and deliver a speech on promoting startups and innovation to accelerate excellence.

As part of his presentation, Cho will deliver the results of a short-term Taiwan startup program that was organized by the MOEA and private sector in March. He is also set to detail central government efforts in cutting SME transportation and logistics costs while developing business continuity plans aimed at enhancing participation in global production chains.

Taiwan is taking the lead in this area of SME operations, staging APEC workshops last month on reliable transportation of goods and improving disaster resilience and cost efficiency. A seminar on green logistics is scheduled for later in the year.

According to the MOEA, Taiwan delegates will hold trade meetings on the sidelines with officials from other economies. In addition, business executives from three local firms will meet with entrepreneurs from around the world to discuss SME experiences and best practices. (JSM)
