Taipei City Mayor Hau Lung-bin signed a memorandum of understanding Sept. 5 in London with Nick Baird, chief executive of UK Trade and Investment, enhancing bilateral trade and investment. The memorandum also allows Taipei, host city of the 2017 Summer Universiade, to benefit from the U.K.’s experience in staging the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Former ROC Vice President Lien Chan held talks with mainland Chinese leader Hu Jintao in Vladivostok, Russia, Sept. 7 on the eve of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders’ Meeting. Prior to the hourlong meeting, Lien said they would not discuss political matters and instead focus on Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECFA) follow-up issues and the subject of Taiwan’s international space.

The ROC Coast Guard Administration said Sept. 6 it will add several vessels to its fleet by 2017, including 3,000-metric ton and 1,000-ton search and rescue ships, a 1,000-metric ton long-range craft, and a 100-metric ton patrol vessel. The decision was made in light of increased fishery disputes in the waters around Taiwan.

Overseas Petroleum and Investment Corp., a subsidiary of CPC Corp. Taiwan, held a launch ceremony Sept. 6 in Singapore for CPC International Trading Pte. Ltd.—the state-run company’s first overseas oil business trading arm. Former ROC Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Lin Sheng-chung, who took over as chairman of CPC Corp. at the start of July, hosted the event.

The Taipei TV Festival is set to kick off Sept. 19 in Taipei City at the Grand Hotel, with a record-high 87 domestic and foreign firms from Africa, Asia, Europe and North America taking part. The three-day event is organized by the ROC Ministry of Culture. (SB-JSM)
