Taiwan and Thailand inked their first bilateral agreement on combating transnational economic crimes Jan. 17, according to the National Police Agency under the ROC Ministry of the Interior. “This pact is a platform for collaboration between the countries,” an NPA official said, adding that it paves the way for both sides to ramp up efforts jointly tackling cross-border drug, financial and Internet crime, as well as cracking down on human trafficking. The agreement was signed by Henry M. J. Chen, ROC representative to Thailand, and Kriangsak Kittichaisaree, executive director of Thailand Trade and Economic Office, at NPA headquarters in Taipei City. Also attending were NPA Director-General Wang Cho-chiun and Lt. Gen. Santi Pensute of the Royal Thai Police. Increased incidence of telecommunications fraud in Southeast Asia requires law enforcement agencies in the region to work together and tackle this crime to ensure the people’s safety, the NPA official said. Since August 2009, the NPA Criminal Investigation Bureau and RTP have jointly cracked 32 high-profile telecommunications fraud rings, arresting 417 criminals, the official added. This cooperation has also seen the two organizations successfully break up drug-trafficking rings targeting Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, as well as freeing a kidnapped Thai-based Taiwan businessman, the official said. “Cross-border crime is a problem the world must face together in the 21st century and no single nation can fight it alone,” the official said. “The pact will build mutual trust and help strengthen transnational law enforcement collaboration.” (JSM) Write to Grace Kuo at mlkuo@mofa.gov.tw |
