Taiwan 'go' player defends Meijin title

Taiwan "go" prodigy Hsieh Yi-min defeated her Japanese opponent Chiaki Mukai in the final round March 10 to win the 22nd Women’s Meijin Tournament in Tokyo, Japan.

The 2-0 win in the best of three showdown marked the 20-year-old Hsieh’s second successful defense of her Meijin title. It also firmly established her dominance of the sport in Japan.

Hsieh recently became the first ever triple-title holder in the history of women’s professional go play in Japan when she won the prestigious Kisei tournament Jan. 28 in the Japanese capital. She also holds the illustrious Honinbo title, which she has won three years in a row.

After the victory, a humble Hsieh said, “I was obviously overly optimistic in the second half of the match, at which point I ran into a little bit of trouble. In the end, I was fortunately able to win after my opponent made a mistake.”

On winning the Meijin crown, Hsieh said the success has allowed her to relax. "After today, I’m going to devote myself to improving my play so that I can win future competitions.” (SB)
