Students take innovative generator to Malaysia

Huang Shao-hsuan and Huang Yu-ting, both students at National Lan Yang Girls' Senior High School in Yilan County, will take their innovative home power supply generator to Malaysia May 13 to participate in the Asian Young Inventors Exhibition 2010.

The two girls have been using their time outside of class over the past few days brushing up on their English skills to present their invention, a micro water-powered fuel cell power generator, in hopes of bringing back a high score.

Originally a concept the two girls had dreamed up on paper, the product eventually garnered praise from the National Science Foundation for its innovative concept in line with current environmental trends, and was recommended for the Malaysian event. Two of the high school's teachers, Lin Kuan-hong and Tsai Ping-hong, helped the girls, allowing the idea to become a reality.

The principle behind this invention is simple. It uses water flows in such places as a water tower, a toilet tank, or a water hose, all items readily found in the household, to generate electric power that is saved in a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell via a special apparatus used to utilize microcurrents to extract accumulated hydrogen via electrolysis.

The greatest selling point for this apparatus is that it is able to take the power of a small, commonplace flow of water that is usually overlooked and transform it into stored, effective energy, increasing the efficiency of energy utilization and benefiting the environment.
