Taiwan sees record visitors from Hong Kong, Macau

Taiwan welcomed 386,751 tourists from Hong Kong and Macau in the first five months of 2012, up 25.7 percent year on year, according to the ROC Tourism Bureau June 14.

“This is the highest figure in history and the result of our promotion efforts,” said Chang Shi-chung, deputy director-general of the Tourism Bureau. “We hope visitors from Hong Kong and Macau can exceed one million this year.”

According to the bureau, visitors from the two regions hit a record high of more than 100,000 in April alone, while the figures also reached a record-breaking number of 817,000 in 2011.

A Tourism Bureau official said that night markets, the Taipei 101 building and the National Palace Museum are the top three most popular tourist destinations in Taiwan.

The official added that an ROC delegation will take part in the 26th International Travel Expo in Hong Kong June 14 to 17. A total of 183 groups from Taiwan—including representatives of farmers’ associations, government agencies, hotels, leisure farms, resorts and travel agencies—will attend the fair.

“The ITE is among Asia’s earliest established travel expos and is also the only travel fair in Hong Kong,” event organizers said, adding that the expo features some 600 exhibitors from around 50 countries and regions. (HZW)
