EPA calls for energy-efficient street lighting

Taiwan could save as much as NT$60 billion (US$2 billion) annually on electricity by replacing regular street lamps with energy-saving alternatives, ROC Environmental Protection Administration Minister Stephen Shu-hung Shen said June 24.

“As energy-efficient light bulbs consume 60 percent less electricity than traditional ones, the savings would be equivalent to eliminating one whole power plant,” Shen said while opening a symposium in New Taipei City on building a low-carbon society.

The minister called on state-owned electricity provider Taiwan Power Co. to make the change, which he said would also boost the green economy sector by providing incentives for manufacturers of environmentally friendly products.

“Over the next decade, the EPA will set up four pioneering low-carbon communities to acquaint people with the idea of a low-impact lifestyle,” he added.

New Taipei City Mayor Eric Liluan Chu said, “Creation of a nuclear-free future for Taiwan should be the government’s ultimate goal, with the active development of alternative energy sources.” The municipality, home to two operating nuclear plants and one under construction, has recently been rocked by controversy over the safety of one of the reactors.

Topics set to be discussed at the conference include the development of renewable energy, disposal of nuclear waste and ways to lessen dependence on fossil and imported fuels.

Hundreds of participants from government agencies, nongovernmental organizations and the private sector are expected to attend the seminar, organizers said.

It will serve as a platform for government officials and environmental groups to exchange ideas on building a sustainable development model for Taiwan, they added.

In its fourth consecutive year, the event was organized by New Taipei City and the National Association for the Promotion of Community Universities. (THN)
