A total of five veteran artists have been honored with the National Award for Arts, the highest tribute to artists in Taiwan, the National Culture and Arts Foundation announced June 25. The recipients are modernist painter Li Xiqi, writer Lin Liang, performance artist Tang Mei-yun, Hakka singer Lai Pi-hsia and architect Hsieh Ying-chun. Li, born in Kinmen in 1938, has been a prolific painter and print artist for over 50 years. He is known for experimenting across a range of artistic materials and themes, the NCAF noted. Tang, who founded a major theater company in 1998, is a prominent creator and educator in traditional Taiwanese opera. Her group has performed throughout Taiwan and overseas. Known for his simplicity of language, Lin has published over 160 books of essays and children’s literature. His thought-provoking reflections on family and life have garnered a wide readership and popular acclaim for well over 60 years. Lai, a Hsinchu native, has dedicated her life to singing and preserving Hakka mountain songs. In 2008, she was presented with an award for her lifetime contributions to Hakka by the Hakka Affairs Council. The 58-year-old Hsieh, acknowledged for his socially engaging architectural projects, made his fame with reconstruction efforts involving indigenous communities in central Taiwan following the Sept. 21, 1999 earthquake. Each recipient will receive NT$1 million (US$33,340) in prize money, with the awards to be presented in Taipei City in late October. Since 1997, the award has recognized outstanding artists for their lifetime achievements in various artistic fields, including architecture, literature, fine art, filmmaking, theater, dance and music, the NCAF said.
