A high-level ROC trade delegation headed by Bureau of Foreign Trade Director-General Cho Shih-chao held one-on-one trade talks in Indonesia June 27, with an estimated 547 buyers taking part. The event generated US$29.3 million in business opportunities for Taiwan manufacturers, according to the BOFT.
A cross-strait nuclear power safety agreement signed between Taiwan’s Straits Exchange Foundation and mainland Chinese’s Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait on Oct. 20 of last year formally took effect June 29.
Driven in large part by growing smart phone sales, the Taiwan information and communications technology sector’s overall production for the whole of 2012 is forecast to reach NT$2.14 trillion (US$72 billion), which would mark an annual rise of 18.7 percent, ahead of the global average of 15.2 percent, the Marketing Intelligence & Consulting Institute said June 28.
Taipei ranks as the 32nd most competitive city in the world, according to the 2011-2012 Global Urban Competitiveness report released June 28 by mainland China’s Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and U.S.-based Bucknell University. Taipei placed higher than Shanghai, which came in at No. 36, and Beijing, No. 55. The top 10 cities are New York, London, Tokyo, Paris, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Singapore, Hong Kong and Seoul, according to the survey. (SB)
