Trade between Taiwan and Saudi Arabia has experienced stable and rapid growth over the past two years, Lai Wei-gong, head of the Economic Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, said July 3. Two-way trade reached US$15.54 billion in 2011, marking an increase of 20.79 percent over the figure for the previous year, while the volume of trade for the first five months of 2012 amounted to US$7.2 billion, up 9.53 percent year on year, according to Lai.
The ROC government’s mainland China policy of maintaining the cross-strait status quo under the principles of no unification, no independence, and no use of military force has brought about a positive development in cross-strait ties and enabled Taiwan’s economy to once again link with the rest of the world, Mainland Affairs Council Deputy Minister Kao Charng said July 1. He made the comments while delivering a speech at the 38th Annual Conference for Overseas Chinese in Europe held in Tenerife, Spain.
Review of the U.S. proposal to upgrade the ROC air force’s fleet of 145 F-16 A/B fighter jets has been completed, with the Letter of Offer and Acceptance detailing the package and the price tag of US$3.8 billion being approved, military officials said July 2. Notification of the decision will be sent to the U.S. military July 5, and the deal is expected to be sealed by the end of the month, according to the officials.
Michelle Chen, lead actress in the Taiwanese smash hit film “You Are the Apple of My Eye,” received the Star Asia Rising Star Award at the 11th New York Asian Film Festival July 2. The film was screened the same day at the Lincoln Center as part of the festival. One of the festival’s three main themes this year is Warriors and Romantics: The New Cinema from Taiwan, for which seven local films have been selected for screening. (SB)
