An investment delegation organized by Taiwan Development Institute on behalf of the ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs visited Amlogic Inc., LED Engin Inc. and Solaria Corp. in Silicon Valley June 25-30. The delegation delivered a presentation June 29 focusing on Taiwan’s information communications technology, R&D and consulting service sectors, with 20 U.S. companies located in the region attending the event.

Taiwan ranks 29th in a global real estate transparency index released July 3 by the real estate service firms Jones Lang LaSalle and LaSalle Investment Management. The country was rated as semitransparent in the survey of 97 markets worldwide. Taiwan’s real estate laws are solid, but there is room for improvement in terms of the level of transparency in sales transactions, the study concluded. Taiwan ranked 33rd in the previous survey of 81 markets around the world in 2010.

A Taiwan delegation led by GlobalTic Association took part in the 2012 Ecopreneur in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, June 18 to 21. Delegations from 23 nations attended the event. Three university teams from Taiwan won the Health and Friendly Business, Social Ecopreneur, and Clean Technology awards. Ecopreneur was established in 2006 with GlobalTic’s guidance and assistance. The international young entrepreneurs’ competition has been held annually since 2007, with the number of participating countries increasing each year.

European Research Council Secretary-General Donald Dingwell is slated to arrive in Taiwan July 8 for a three-day visit to promote the council’s latest research subsidy program. Total subsidies under the program amount to 1.8 billion euros (US$2.34 billion), and researchers from around the world are eligible to apply for grants of up to 3.5 million euros per research project.

The Taiwan External Development Council (TAITRA) recently completed its empirical study of the degree of economic contribution of this year’s jointly held Taipei International Auto Parts & Accessories Show and Taipei International Automobile Electronics Show. The TAITRA’s findings indicate that the shows’ contribution to Taiwan’s gross domestic product was more than US$1.4 billion in 2011, or 0.3 percent of the nation’s total GDP, for the year. (SB)
