An ROC government investment promotion tour to Japan concluded July 13 in Tokyo with four investment commitments in Taiwan from prominent Japanese firms, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs July 16. Kyoto-headquartered Nidec Corp., Yokohama-based Nippon Aleph Corp., Tokyo’s Takaoka Electric Mfg. Co. Ltd. and a fourth firm that the ministry declined to identify signed four separate letters of intent with the MOEA Department of Investment Services and Taiwan-Japan Industrial Cooperation Promotion Office (TJPO). Takaoka intends to set up a plant producing semiconductor testing equipment, Nidec will conduct R&D on engines, while Nippon Aleph and the unidentified firm will set up shop in a Tainan City Taiwan-Japan industrial park to produce automobile component sectors and heat exchangers, respectively. The TJPO also inked a memorandum of understanding with Tokyo-headquartered Dream Link Entertainment Inc. that calls for the agency to assist the latter in partnering with local firms in the services and culture and creative sectors. MOEA Deputy Minister Francis Kuo-hsin Liang and Mie Governor Eikei Suzuki oversaw the signing ceremony at which the TJPO also finalized a memorandum with the Mie Prefecture Government that focuses on promoting bilateral exchanges between small and medium enterprises. Led by Liang, the delegation visited several leading Japanese firms in the digital content, food services manufacturing and retail sectors, including DNP Corp., Hitachi Ltd., Mitsubishi Corp. and Sumitomo Corp. Highlights of the five-day tour included two investment seminars in Tokyo and Osaka that attracted more than 300 and 180 representatives from leading Japanese firms.
