Dawn McCall, coordinator of the U.S. State Department Bureau of International Information Programs, will meet with ROC President Ma Ying-jeou, Minister of Foreign Affairs Timothy Chin-tien Yang and Minister of Education Chiang Wei-ling during a visit to Taiwan July 17-20. She will also travel to the central city of Taichung.
The International Baseball Federation announced July 14 that Taipei City will host the second IBAF 12U Baseball World Championship in 2013. Taipei also hosted the inaugural event for under-12 players in 2011, when the Taiwan national team won the tournament.
The four Taiwan students competing in the International Biology Olympiad in Singapore July 8-15 won three gold medals and one silver, marking the second best performance of any country. A total of 236 students from 59 countries took part in the event.
Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corp. signed a cooperative agreement July 12 with Meggitt Defence Systems to supply components for the U.K. defense contractor’s Banshee target drones. Under the terms of the deal, signed at the Farnborough International Airshow in the U.K., if Meggitt approves a sample of drone parts manufactured by AIDC, the latter will then receive orders to provide components for 250 drones per year. If the deal goes forward, it will represent the first time that components for U.K. defense products have been manufactured in Taiwan. (SB)
