The ROC Cabinet is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to keep Taiwan’s economy on track amid challenging conditions at home and abroad, Premier Sean C. Chen said July 19. “All agencies and ministries have been directed to map out concrete stimulus measures ASAP,” Chen said. “These efforts will be efficient and effective so as to deliver results in the shortest period of time.” The premier’s remarks came after Taipei-based Academia Sinica revised down its 2012 economic growth forecast from 3.81 percent to 1.94 percent July 18, and cautioned that the short-term outlook is not encouraging. “One of our top priorities is to increase domestic investment,” Chen said, adding that this will be achieved through a variety of programs spanning infrastructure projects, a biomedical device cluster in southern Taiwan and developing advanced technology for high-tech equipment at Central Taiwan Science Park. Other measures include canvassing input from the academic and private sectors at a Cabinet-organized national conference next month. The agenda features such topics as boosting Taiwan’s investment environment, promoting domestic consumption, expanding exports and nurturing emerging industries. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is also set to play its part by continuing to attract overseas investment with a focus on Japanese firms and Taiwan-controlled businesses operating in foreign markets. Setting up more offices in emerging markets to help Taiwan firms expand their reach is one proposal being studied by the MOEA.
