MND declares computer war games a success

The ROC Ministry of National Defense said July 23 that it has successfully completed a five-day computer-simulated military exercise involving advanced attack helicopters and anti-missile systems.

“The war games sought to test the joint operation and rapid reaction capabilities of the national command system, as well as boosting integrated combat effectiveness among units from the air force, army and navy,” an MND official said.

Held July 16-20, the exercise simulated missile and drone attacks by mainland Chinese forces against targets in Taiwan. It also encompassed multiple scenarios involving other Asia-Pacific nations.

Long-range early warning radar and Patriot missile defense systems were put through their paces, as were AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters and P-3C Orion maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft, both of which are expected to enter service in Taiwan next year.

The war games represent the second stage of the annual Han Kuang military exercise, the largest and most important drills involving all three branches of the ROC military. (JSM)
