The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) signed a mutual assistance agreement with two U.S. business associations July 23 in Taipei City, paving the way for greater bilateral private sector cooperation. Finalized by Walter M.S. Yeh, TAITRA executive vice president, Li Wei, chief representative of Arlington-based Consumer Electronics Association’s China Office and Chris Meyer, vice president of sales of Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the pact requires signatories to promote exchanges in the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions sector. “The U.S. is Taiwan’s third largest commercial partner, with bilateral trade amounting to US$62.12 billion in 2011,” Yeh said at the signing ceremony. “We believe the pact will be instrumental in TAITRA efforts to promote Taiwan and create more opportunities for both sides.” According to Yeh, TAITRA has been in close contact with the two organizations since opening a Los Angeles office last year. In January, TAITRA-sponsored Computex signed a memorandum of understanding with CEA-organized Consumer Electronics Show to enhance promotional exchanges and share market information. Li and Meyer thanked TAITRA for its support, and expect the three-way tie-up to boost attendance at CES and Computex, two of the biggest trade shows in the world. During their stay in Taiwan, Li and Meyer also toured several leading local firms to better understand the island’s business environment and industrial sector development.
