ROC President Ma Ying-jeou posted a message on his Facebook page July 31, urging citizens to take precautionary measures as Typhoon Saola approaches Taiwan. Ma said he was keeping abreast of the latest situation and that Premier Sean C. Chen was closely monitoring related disaster preparedness and prevention efforts.

Taiwan’s Chuang Chih-yuan advanced to the final four in the men’s singles table tennis competition at the 2012 London Olympics by soundly defeating Romania’s Adrian Crisan 11-3, 11-4, 11-4, 11-5 in the quarterfinals July 31. Chuang, ranked eighth in the world in July, is seeded fifth in the tournament.

Total credit card spending in Taiwan in June amounted to NT$172.1 billion (US$5.7 billion), setting a new monthly record high, the Financial Supervisory Commission said July 31. The figure marked an increase of NT$20.3 billion over the previous month’s level, according to the commission.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Department of Investment Services will hold the 2012 Taiwan Investment Environment and Business Opportunities Seminar for foreign service-sector enterprises at National Taiwan University Hospital Aug. 24. Introductions will be given in the areas of the research and development and digital content sectors, with the aim of attracting more foreign investment in Taiwan. (SB)
