A total of 5.01 million trips abroad were made by ROC citizens during the first six months of 2012, an increase of 8.5 percent over the figure for the same period a year earlier, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Aug. 1. Females accounted for less than half the total, but they constituted more than 50 percent of those traveling to Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and the U.S. The ratio of females heading to South Korea saw the largest rate of increase, rising 11.3 percent over the level five years earlier.
Tamkang University student Yeh Chih-chang won in the Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 category at the 2012 Worldwide Competition on Microsoft Office in the U.S. city of Las Vegas Aug. 1. It marked Taiwan’s fifth top prize at the annual competition in the last four years.
Taiwan photographers won two gold and two silver medals at the Indonesian Salon of Art Photography 2012 competition. The presentation ceremony was held in the Indonesian capital Jakarta Aug. 2. A total of 1,128 photographers from 63 countries competed in the second annual event, with 126 of the roughly 14,000 entries being selected for awards.
As many as 97 percent of people in Taiwan aged 18 to 40 years use the Internet every day, well above the figure of 76 percent who watch television daily, according to the results of a recent survey by Google Taiwan. Among those who surf the Internet, 48 percent are online for more than 28 hours per week. The survey was conducted on 500 people in the cities of Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung. (SB)
