Brent Christensen is scheduled to assume the post of deputy director of the American Institute in Taiwan’s Taipei Office Aug. 6, according to AIT. Christensen will serve as acting director until new Director Christopher J. Marut arrives to take up the position, AIT said Aug. 3. Marut replaces William A. Stanton, who retired at the end of July.
Contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced August 5 that it has joined a co-investment project launched by European semiconductor equipment maker ASML Holding NV, with the deal including the purchase of a 5-percent stake in ASML for 838 million euros (US$1.04 billion), as well as a commitment to invest 276 million euros over the next five years to support R&D for next-generation semiconductor equipment and production technologies.
Taiwan-born U.S. Major League starter Chen Wei-yin earned his 10th win of the season by pitching seven scoreless innings to help guide the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla., Aug. 5. Chen holds the record for most wins by a Taiwanese starter in a rookie season, eclipsing Wang Chien-ming’s eight wins in 2005.
Taiwan’s Chang Kai-chen and her Japanese partner, Shuko Aoyama, won the Citi Tennis Open women’s doubles title in Washington, D.C., Aug. 3. Chang’s world women’s doubles ranking is expected to rise to 90th from 125th as a result of the victory.
Students from Taiwan have claimed one gold, two silvers, two bronzes and three honorable mentions in graphic design at the 2011 International Design Awards. Feng Cheng-wen, a graduate student at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, was named emerging graphic designer of the year, winning one gold and one silver. (SB-HSJ-THN)
