Wu set for Dominican presidential inauguration

ROC Vice President Wu Den-yih will attend the inauguration ceremony of Danilo Medina, president-elect of the Dominican Republic, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aug. 6.

Wu, who is representing President Ma Ying-jeou at the event, will join with heads of state and dignitaries from around the world in celebrating Medina’s Aug. 16 swearing-in.

“Vice President Wu is embarking on his 12-day trip beginning Aug. 13,” said Simon Shen-yeaw Ko, deputy minister of foreign affairs. “He will make transit stops in New York and Los Angeles.”

The ROC delegation, which is headed by Wu, comprises officials from the MOFA, Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission and other central government agencies. They will exchange views with Medina on bolstering bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern, Ko said.

Wu is scheduled to meet with outgoing Dominican President Leonel Fernandez, visit ROC-Dominican cooperation projects and attend the opening ceremony of a job training facility, he added.

The vice president’s trip also takes him to Belize, another ROC ally in the Caribbean, where he will congratulate Prime Minister Dean Barrow on his re-election in March and inspect the results of ROC-funded development programs.

“Wu’s visit signifies the importance the ROC government attaches to relations with Belize and will further boost robust exchanges between the two countries,” Ko said.

The vice president is set to return to Taiwan Aug. 24. (JSM)
