Gilbert Ouedraogo, Burkina Faso’s minister of transportation, postal services and digital economy, is visiting Taiwan Aug. 6-10 to learn more about ROC e-government developments, as well as transport, postal and air service policies for reference in formulating and implementing related policies in the West African nation.

The fourth cross-strait tourism exchange roundtable is slated to be held in the southern Taiwan port city of Kaohsiung Aug. 8, the ROC Tourism Bureau said Aug. 6. The two sides will discuss a range of issues, including ferry services, leisure agriculture and traveler’s insurance. Tourism Bureau Director-General David W.J. Hsieh will head the Taiwan delegation, while mainland China’s top representative at the meeting will be Shao Qiwei, director of the National Tourism Administration.

Honigmann Hong, former associate research fellow at the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research, has been appointed director of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party’s Department of China Affairs, the party announced Aug. 6. The DPP recently re-established the department, which will oversee the party’s mainland China policy.

Taiwan’s consumer price index for July rose 2.46 percent year on year, marking the steepest annual increase since October 2008, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics announced Aug. 7. The main factors for the increase were a steep rise in fruit and vegetable prices due to poor weather, as well as rising oil prices, according to the DGBAS. (SB)
