Liu Chorng-jian, a member of the ROC National Communications Commission, represented Taiwan at the ninth Asia-Pacific Economic Forum’s Telecommunications and Information Ministerial Meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, Aug. 7-8. Liu gave a briefing on Taiwan’s information and communications technology policies and the nation’s digital convergence goals.
The ROC government plans to invest NT$10.37 billion (US$346.36 million) through the end of 2016 on the first stage of a program to enhance industrial base technology development launched near the end of last year by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, according to the ministry Aug. 9. The MOEA said it hopes to increase the manufacturing sector’s added-value ratio from 21 percent in 2008 to 28 percent by 2020, which would rank Taiwan in the top 10 among Organisation for Economic Co-operation Development countries.
A total of 232 Taiwan manufacturers are scheduled to take part in Eurobike 2012, the world’s largest bicycle trade show, in Friedrichshafen, Germany, Aug. 29 to Sept. 1. Roughly 1,200 enterprises from 50 countries around the globe will be setting up booths at the fair.
“Hold Chair,” a winner of the 2010 Taipei Industrial Design Award, has won a 2012 International Design Excellence Award bronze medal in the student category, the Taipei City Department of Economic Development said Aug. 9. The IDEA awards are the most prestigious industrial design awards in the U.S.
The “Free Angle and Naked Camera,” developed by students at National Cheng Kung University’s Department of Electrical Engineering, has won a prestigious red dot award for design concept. The camera, which combines a smart phone, applications and information transmission technologies, is just 5 centimeters long, 3.5 cm wide, and 2 cm thick, allowing it to be worn on the body of an athlete during competition to deliver live, up-close action to viewers.
