A troupe from the aboriginal Tjimur Dance Theatre of Pingtung County has been invited to participate in Planet IndigenUS, the world’s largest indigenous festival, in Toronto, Canada, later this month, the ROC Ministry of Culture said Aug. 14. The dance company, which blends traditional and modern elements, will stage three shows at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre.

Taiwan’s China Steel Group said Aug. 14 that the company and several of its subsidiaries, including C.S. Aluminum Corp., CHC Resources Corp. and Dragon Steel Corp., have been presented with a number of green awards under the British Standards Institution’s corporate social responsibility awards for this year.

A delegation of officials from the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade’s trade promotion office in Ho Chi Minh City visited the ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Department of Investment Services Aug. 14 to exchange views on enhancing bilateral investment exchanges. The MOEA noted that accumulated investment in Vietnam by Taiwanese businesses stands at more than US$2.36 billion, ranking behind only Japan and South Korea. Taiwan and Vietnam have already signed agreements on investment protection and avoidance of double taxation and have initiated exchanges of visits by high-level officials, the ministry said.

The average score of ROC citizens taking the International English Language Testing System exam in 2011 ranked second highest in Asia, behind only Hong Kong and tied with Vietnam and South Korea, according to the results released by the examining body at Cambridge University, the British Council said Aug. 14. Taiwan test takers scored higher than those from Japan, mainland China and Thailand and improved on their overall average for the previous year.

Nine Taiwan universities rank in the top 500 globally for 2012, according to a survey released by Shanghai Jiao Tung University’s Center for World-Class Universities Aug. 15. National Taiwan University placed the highest among local schools, ranking in the top 150. Harvard University topped the overall list for the 10th straight year. (SB-THN)
