The i-Taiwan 12 Projects, focused primarily on public infrastructure, have attracted NT$128.63 billion (US$4.28 billion) in private investment this year as of the end of the second quarter, according to the ROC Public Construction Commission Aug. 16.
ROC Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-shiang said Aug. 16 that he hopes Taiwan and the Philippines can soon sign an economic cooperation agreement. Shih’s comments came at the 22nd Meeting of the Chinese-Philippine Business Council and Philippine-Chinese Business Council in Taipei City.
A U.S. Procurement Seminar Meeting Aug. 16 in Taipei City created business opportunities valued at US$149.56 million for local companies, according to the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA). Firms took part in 232 one-on-one matchmaking sessions with 27 major U.S. corporations. The event, organized by TAITRA and commissioned by the Bureau of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, was part of government efforts to mitigate the impact of the U.S.-South Korea free trade agreement, which took effect in March.
The Ministry of the Interior approved amendments to the Immigration Act Aug. 16 relaxing residency requirements for foreigners and regulations governing entry and exit. Revisions include an extension of the application period for residency, simplification of the application process, permission for spouses and minor children of outstanding foreign professionals to apply for permanent residency, and cancellation of the requirement that permanent residents be present in the country at least 183 days every year. The move is aimed at helping resolve Taiwan’s talent crisis, the MOI said. (THN)
