The ROC government’s East China Sea peace initiative was highlighted by Chen Kuo-ming, deputy representative to Austria, in a letter to the editor published Aug. 27 in Vienna daily Die Presse. He said ROC sovereignty over the Diaoyutai Archipelago is non-negotiable but the government is prepared to share the area’s resources with other parties. Chen added that the agreement reached between Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands over the North Sea continental shelf could be used as model in transforming the East China Sea into a region of peace and cooperation.
Mainland Chinese in the cities of Fuzhou, Jinan, Shenzhen and Xi-an will be allowed to visit Taiwan from Aug. 28 as individual tourists. Residents of 13 metropolises in mainland China are now eligible under the program, which was introduced by the ROC government June 28, 2011.
Taiwan’s manufacturing sector index inched up to 88.46 points in July, up from 87.7 the month before. The increase is the first in three months of declines, according to the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research Aug. 28.
Consumers in Taiwan use electronic payments for 25.3 percent of their purchases, trailing those in Hong Kong at 64.2 percent, mainland China at 50.3 percent, Singapore at 50.2 percent and New Zealand at 27.8 percent, a poll conducted by Euromonitor Merchant Segment last December revealed.
