Fifteen international students recommended by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for scholarships are visiting Taiwan March 4 to 10 to take part in the opening ceremony for Tamkang University’s e-learning on-the-job master’s program in Asian studies and attend face-to-face classes in the program for the first time. The students come from Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Paraguay.
Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei grabbed her first Women’s Tennis Association singles title at the BMW Malaysian Open March 4. The 26-year-old Hsieh, currently ranked 123rd in the world, is expected to move up the list following the victory. She has won eight WTA doubles titles in the past. Taiwan’s Chuang Chia-jung and Chang Kai-chen won the doubles title in Malaysia the same day.
The international news and current affairs television channel France 24 will be available to viewers in Taiwan by the end of this year, while TV 5 Monde will add Chinese subtitles to its French programming in Taiwan, the French Institute in Taipei said March 4. According to the institute, the number of Taiwan high school students studying French has been gradually increasing, with the language now trailing only English and Japanese in popularity. (SB-THN)
