U.S. House Rep. Robert Andrews has introduced a proposal calling for the establishment of a Congressional oversight commission that would be required to issue a report within one year of its first meeting detailing the effectiveness of implementation of the Taiwan Relations Act since 2000, the Formosan Association for Public Affairs said in a statement released June 7.
The National Science Council announced a new set of measures June 7 aimed at helping Taiwan’s universities and colleges compete with their international counterparts in attracting outstanding talent from overseas. The measures are expected to cost NT$200 million (US$6.7 million) per year and help the schools recruit at least 170 people annually.
Taiwan’s exports for May registered a 2.2 percent increase over the level for the previous month but a decline of 6.3 percent year on year, according to the latest customs statistics released June 7. Capital equipment imports rose for a fourth consecutive month, but total imports for May were down 10.5 percent from a year earlier. The nation’s trade surplus for the month increased by 83.9 percent year on year, the tallies revealed.
South Korean tourist arrivals in Taiwan topped 240,000 in 2011, 12 percent more than in 2010, the Tourism Bureau said June 7. It forecast a rise of 15 percent for 2012, saying the launch of direct flight services between Taipei Songshan Airport and Seoul’s Gimpo International Airport in May of this year has provided a boost to citizen exchanges between the two countries.
The 2012 LED Lighting Taiwan exhibition is slated to be held at the Taipei World Trade Center’s Nangang Exhibition Hall June 19-21, with a record-high 253 companies setting up displays, representing an increase of about 18 percent over the number at last year’s event. Approximately 25 percent of the enterprises taking part this year are foreign firms, while 51 mainland Chinese manufacturers are setting up a total of 80 booths, up by 50 percent over last year, according to the exhibition organizer, the Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association.
