The Council for Economic Planning and Development said June 18 that it will hold six economic forums starting from the end of June and continuing until mid-July. The forums—on investment environment, domestic demand, export measures, international trade and economics, emerging industries and tax policy—are being held in response to calls by the private sector urging the central government to be more prepared for any possible fallout from the ongoing European sovereign debt crisis, the CEPD said.
Taiwanese tennis player Hsieh Su-wei and Hungary’s Timea Babos won the doubles title at the AEGON Classic in Birmingham, England, by defeating Lisa Raymond and Liezel Huber of the United States 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 10-8 in the finals June 18. The unseeded pair pulled off a major comeback after trailing 8-4 in the final set.
Taiwan athletes won one gold, three silver and three bronze medals in beach volleyball and roller speed skating events June 18 at the third Asian Beach Games being held in Haiyang, mainland China, June 16-22. Taiwan’s medal haul stands at three golds, three silvers and four bronzes after three days of competition.
Taiwan won the most platinum medals at the International Schools CyberFair 2012, held on the internet, with Kaohsiung City and Taipei City schools placing first globally with seven platinums each. (SB)
