<p><P>The ROC government congratulated <STRONG>Mohamed Morsi</STRONG> on his election as president of Egypt, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs June 27. “We express our deepest respect and admiration for the Egyptian people’s resolve in the pursuit of democracy,” the MOFA added. Morsi took 51.7 percent of the vote to defeat former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq with 48 percent. Morsi succeeds Hosni Mubarak, who was ousted from power after three decades in February last year following 18 days of demonstrations.</P>
<P><BR>Taiwan’s leading <STRONG>economic indicators</STRONG> flashed a “blue light” for the seventh straight month in May, representing continued sluggishness, the Council for Economic Planning and Development announced June 27. However, the total score of the monitoring indicators rose by one point from the previous month to stand at 15, indicating that the domestic economy could have bottomed out and may begin gradually rebounding, according to the CEPD. 
<P><BR>Stephen G. Lakis, president of the U.S.-based<STRONG> State Legislative Leaders Foundation</STRONG>, led an eight-member delegation on a visit to Taipei City Mayor Hau Lung-bin’s office June 27. During the visit, Lakis stated that the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization would set up its Asia office in Taipei City by next year at the earliest. 
<P><BR>American Institute in Taiwan <STRONG>Director William A. Stanton</STRONG> delivered a speech on Taiwan-U.S. relations at the American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei June 27, during which he stated that his feelings toward Taiwan have become deeper and deeper during his tenure and that he hopes to remain in the country for an even longer period of time after he retires. Stanton is slated to step down as head of the AIT at the end of this month. (SB)<BR></P></p>
