U.S. chipmaker Intel Corp. said Oct. 17 it has opened an R&D institute in Taiwan to meet strong customer demand from the Asia-Pacific region.

“The Advanced Technology Support and Development Center will help ensure that Taiwan remains a global leader in the information and communications technology sector,” Chen Li-sheng, general manager of Intel Taiwan, said during a news briefing.

The center, Chen added, offers design-for-excellence technologies for silicon and platform debugging, upgrades of thermal modules and vibration resistance for ultrabooks, embedded system applications and a place for state-of-the-art experiments.

The ATSDC will also allow Intel to collaborate more closely with other Taiwanese research institutions, according to Chen.

In opening the ATSDC, Intel also combined two other research centers in Taiwan—the Application Design-in Center, founded in 1995, and the Intel Innovation Center, established in 2003.

Intel said the merger represents a deepening of its commitment to Taiwan.

The company has hired new Taiwanese employees this year and increased its investments on the island, thanks to strong demand for cloud computing and software, hardware and firmware technologies, according to Ken K. Lau, the company’s managing director responsible for sales and marketing in the Asia-Pacific region.

“We have increased the number of our engineers in Taiwan by about 20 percent since 2009,” Lau said. (HZW)
