The Ministry of Economic Affairs launched a permanent exhibition pavilion Dec. 26 in Taipei to showcase first-rate innovative Taiwanese products associated with the Taiwan Excellence prize.

Taiwan Excellence is a domestic competition held by the ministry. Now in its 20th year, it has helped put the spotlight on more than 6,000 quality products and helped spur innovation and brand development, according to the ministry.

The MOEA said the pavilion was built in collaboration with the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and the Taipei City government, with many past winners from the Taiwan Excellence competition on display.

“We expect the Taiwan Excellence exhibit to be a place where technical innovation can be showcased,” said TAITRA Chairman Wang Chih-kang. “In addition, we hope that it can become a tourist attraction, with its display pieces being changed every three to four months.”

Among the items currently being shown is an entertainment robot created by Campal Communications Inc. The device, which has 100 facial expressions and can respond to verbal commands, is highly suitable for preschool children, the company said.

Freerider Corp. is showcasing its foldable, aluminum electric scooter, whose sleek appearance and light weight of 22.6 kilograms helped the company capture a Taiwan Excellence prize in 2011.

The pavilion also includes gold-winners at international design competitions such as Germany’s International Forum Design and red dot design awards, Japan’s Good Design Award, and the U.S. International Design Excellence Award.

Located next to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the pavilion is open from 9:30 to 17:30 Tuesday to Friday, 9:30 to 20:30 on Saturdays, and 9:30 to 17:30 on Sundays. Admission is free of charge, the MOEA said. (HZW)
