Officials gathered for the opening of Nomad Taiwan - Taitung April 11 in the southeastern county as part of the government’s plans to promote innovation and entrepreneurship by recruiting digital nomads from around the world.
According to the National Development Council, the launch event was attended by Deputy Minister Jan Fang-guan and Taitung Magistrate April Yao, along with political figures and business leaders from Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.
Jan said being a digital nomad has become a very popular form of employment for international tech professionals. The government is keen to work with the private sector to recruit high-caliber talents from all over the world to enhance the country’s prowess in artificial intelligence computing, he added.
Echoing Jan’s remarks, Taitung’s Deputy Magistrate Wang Chih-hui said that local government has maintained close contact with foreign digital nomads holding a Taiwan Employment Gold Card since 2020. The government also set up the TTNOMAD social media platform in 2023 that has seen more than 120 digital nomads visit the county.
During the launch event, the local government concluded a cooperative letter of intent with Japan’s Digital Nomad Public Private Council. Under the pact, both parties will arrange reciprocal visits and integrate resources for joint global promotion.
Taiwan’s digital nomad visa, which took effect in January 2025, allows qualified foreign professionals to stay in the country for up to six months. The NDC said it will continue to roll out initiatives to promote Taiwan as a top destination in the Asia-Pacific for digital professionals. (SFC-E)
