The Ministry of Economic Affairs unveiled the winners of the first edition of the Best AI Awards May 3 in Taipei City, spotlighting the ministry’s commitment to nurturing artificial intelligence expertise.
The event, aimed at inspiring more enterprises and students to get involved in the research and development of applied AI technologies, drew entries from 1,253 teams from 36 countries. Eight groups were awarded gold medals, including National Taiwan University and National Central University, Taipei City-based HiTrust and Eys3D Microelectronics Co., and teams from the Philippines and the U.K., the MOEA said.
Submissions spanned information and communications, 18.4 percent; manufacturing, 16.2 percent; medicine, 15.9 percent; retail, 10.2 percent; education, 8.6 percent; and finance, 7.8 percent. One manufacturing team leveraged AI to optimize receipt management, enhancing efficiency and reducing errors, while another from the medical sector applied AI to disease prediction and diagnosis, among other creative solutions.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Deputy Economic Minister Ho Chin-tsang noted that AI is rapidly restructuring the global finance, manufacturing, medicine and service industries. The competition sought to address industry needs while promoting talent cultivation and technological innovation, he said, adding that the ministry will continue to facilitate industrial advancement through policies and resources.
The awards will be held annually, the MOEA said, pledging to keep working with the academic and industrial sectors to accelerate the development of AI and transform Taiwan into an AI hub. (POC-E)
