Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi said that Taiwan and the U.S. could reach a comprehensive and robust agreement within the 90-day reciprocal tariff suspension period and expressed hope that the two countries would establish a fair and mutually beneficial trade partnership.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Chen made the remarks while speaking with Bloomberg TV’s Yvonne Man May 29 in Taipei City. The interview resulted in two articles and two videos released the same day on the global media outlet’s website and TV channel.

The deputy FM emphasized that Taiwan hoped to settle a more favorable rate since high tariffs on selected products would squeeze corporate profits. As such, Chen called on the U.S. to reexamine related policies by taking overall economic benefits into consideration.

According to the MOFA, Chen noted that Taiwan’s government has clearly stated that it will protect farmers’ rights and safeguard food security. He added that a delegation of high-ranking officials would be attending the Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference set for June 3-5 in the northernmost U.S. state to discuss procuring liquefied natural gas and investing in related infrastructure.

The deputy minister said that in March of this year, the Kaohsiung City-headquartered CPC Corp. signed a letter of intent for investment in Alaska LNG’s pipeline and purchase of fuel. He described the decision as a display of the country’s determination to reinforce diverse energy supplies. (POC-E)
