Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin co-hosted the Taiwan-European Union Trade and Investment Dialogue with Sabine Weyand, head of the EU’s Directorate-General for Trade and Economic Security, Dec. 12 in Brussels.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs said that this meeting centered on economic security, semiconductor supply chain resilience, trade-related climate measures and the global overcapacity of steel.
At the dialogue Kung shared recent measures undertaken by Taiwan to improve manufacturing and technological capabilities in order to enhance international competitiveness. He added that among them is the establishment of overseas trade and investment centers to provide domestic businesses with opportunities to deepen industry links with major economic partners to reinforce Taiwan’s global strategic role.
According to the ministry, Kung also met with Kerstin Jorna, top official at the EU’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. The two parties exchanged views on industry policies and cooperation issues related to small- and medium-sized enterprises, the ministry said.
In addition to meeting with Weyand and Jorna, Kung held a forum to speak with Taiwanese people doing business in Brussels to gain insight into their operations and the challenges they face to be better able to provide appropriate assistance.
According to the MOEA, the EU is Taiwan’s fourth largest trading partner, with total bilateral trade exceeding US$68.7 billion in 2024. The EU is Taiwan’s largest source of foreign investment and invested US$59.5 billion in the country between 1952 and 2024. (POC-E)
