July 16. Lt. Gen. Louis L. Mundell, deputy commander of the Logistic Command of the U.S. Air Force, arrives for a two-day visit.

17. Samuel Wang, new ambassador to Paraguay, leaves for Asuncion.

19. China establishes diplomatic relations with Malta.

22. Nguyen Van Ding, deputy speaker of the Vietnamese National Assembly, arrives for a visit.

23. Tso Shun-sheng, a leader of the Young China Party, arrives from Hongkong for a home visit.

24. China's first cardinal, Thomas Tien, dies of pneumonia at 78.

27. The Executive Yuan (Cabinet) confirm­ed the appointment of four new ambassadors:

Tin Mou-shih to Congo (Kinshasa), Li Nan-hsing to Niger, Huang Cheng to Gabon and Shen Tsu-hsun to Rwanda.

Chiu Nan, deputy director of the Gov­ernment Information Office, and Chen Chi­-ying a writer, leave for the Ivory Coast to attend the 1967 PEN Conference.

28. The Chinese cultural renaissance movement is officially organized with President Chiang Kai-shek as the leader.

The East Zone elimination round of the 4th Asian Cup soccer competition opens in Taipei with Indonesia, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and the Republic of China partic­ipating.

Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Chen Yi-yuan returns to help arrange for the visit of Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda, President of the Republic of Malawi.

The Taiwan Provincial Tourism Bureau announces that in the first six months of 1967 a total of 115,157 tourists visited the island, an increase of 37 per cent over the corresponding period in 1966.

31. Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture Lam Van Tri arrives for a four-day visit.

August 3. The Executive Yuan decides to extend the period of compulsory education from six to nine years beginning in 1968.

Ambassador to the United States Chow Shu-kai returns for two weeks of home consultations.

4. Malawi President Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda arrives for an eight-day state visit at the invitation of President Chiang Kai-shek.

6. Prof. Liang Shih-chiu's translation of the complete works of William Shakespeare is published.

The Provincial Department of Civil Affairs announces the island's population at the end of June totaled 13,142,028, an increase of 22,850 persons over the previous month.

Dr. Cha Liang-chien, president of the Supreme Court, returns from the World Jurists' Conference in Geneva.

10. The Overseas Chinese Conference on Education and Culture hears President Chiang Kai-shek at the opening of a five-day meeting.

11. The Executive Yuan appoints a five-member delegation to the 22nd U.N. General Assembly: U.N. Ambassador Liu Chieh, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs H. K. Yang, Ambassador to Turkey Pao Chun-chien, Am­bassador to Mexico Chen Chih-ping, and Ambassador to Canada Hsueh Yu-chi.

13. Fifteen Grand Justices nominated by President Chiang Kai-shek are approved by the Control Yuan.

A six-member Korean economic good­ will mission headed by Korean Ambassador to Japan Kim Dong Jo arrives for a three-day visit.

Dr. George E. Armstrong, chairman of the American Bureau for Medical Aid to China, arrives for a 10-day visit.

15. Naokichi Kitazawa, member of the Japanese Diet, arrives for a three-day visit.
