An online forum focusing on the Taiwan-U.S. partnership and its role in cross-strait relations at a time of heightened tensions is set to kick off Nov. 18 in Washington, according to the Mainland Affairs Council.

Commissioned by the MAC and jointly organized by U.S. think tank The Heritage Foundation and Taipei City-based Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, the event—titled “Taiwan-U.S. Partnership in Challenging Times”—will highlight how maintaining peace and stability is in the best interests as well as being the joint responsibility of both Taiwan and China, MAC Minister Cheng Ming-tong said.

According to the MAC, THF President Kay C. James and U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey are scheduled to deliver remarks, with other prominent panelists including Randall Schriver, chairman of Virginia-based Project 2049 Institute and former U.S. assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs, and Lai I-chung, president of Taiwan think tank The Prospect Foundation.

Participants will discuss regional security, China’s political landscape and the trilateral relationship among Taipei, Washington and Beijing in the post-pandemic era, the MAC said. There will also be opportunities to exchange views on the impact of the U.S. presidential election held earlier this month, as well as ideas for how Taiwan can continue working with like-minded partners to maintain cross-strait peace while safeguarding freedom and democracy, it added.
