The recent remarks by Japan Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Defense Minister Shinjirō Koizumi stressing the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are sincerely appreciated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the MOFA, during her meeting with Chinese Leader Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders’ Meeting Oct. 31 in Gyeongju, South Korea, Takaichi reiterated the importance of cross-strait peace and stability for the international community, including Japan. She also expressed serious concern over China’s intensification of military activities near Japan.
While meeting his Chinese counterpart Nov. 1 on the sidelines of ADMM-Plus in Malaysia, Koizumi reiterated the same stance and voiced similar concern over China’s expanding military actions in the East China Sea and the Pacific region.
The MOFA said Japan’s latest remarks are consistent with those delivered in meetings with China since 2024, including talks between the two leaders on the sidelines of an APEC event in November 2024, as well as foreign ministerial meetings in Beijing in December 2024, Tokyo in March 2025 and Kuala Lumpur in July 2025.
As authoritarian expansion continues to challenge the rules-based international order and create escalating tension around the world, cross-strait peace and stability are closely linked to global security and prosperity and are in the interest of the international community, the MOFA said.
The ministry urges the international community to continue taking action to safeguard cross-strait security. The government will keep enhancing Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities and social resilience while working with its democratic partners to promote peace, stability and prosperity in Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific, it added.
