Ongoing remarks and statements from seven allies backing Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change have been received by the government and people of Taiwan with gratitude, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nov. 20.
During the Nov. 17-18 High Level segment at the 30th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC held in Belem, Brazil, Taiwan’s allies Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and the Marshall Islands all expressed staunch support, and Paraguay issued a national statement to support Taiwan’s inclusion in the convention.
Bremity Lakjohn, minister in assistance to the president and environment of the Marshall Islands, said that Taiwan should be included in the mechanism, and its contributions are aligned with COP30’s focus on collective efforts. Joseph Emmanuel Philippe, director general of Haiti’s Ministry of the Environment, said that only through inclusive action could a global transition that leaves no one behind be achieved, reasserting that Taiwan should be permitted to constructively participate in UNFCCC meetings.
Orlando Habet, Belize’s minister of sustainable development, climate change and disaster risk management, said that Taiwan’s innovative clean energy solutions and support for countries at greatest risk from the effects of climate change cannot be overlooked. Joyelle Clarke, minister of sustainable development, environment, climate action and constituency empowerment from Saint Kitts and Nevis, said that climate change knows no borders and the voices of all nations should be included.
Guatemalan Vice Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change Edwin Castellanos said that Taiwan has expertise in carbon pricing, reduction and climate change adaptation, and is committed to achieving net-zero emissions. Pauline Antoine-Prospere, Saint Lucian parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology and Vocational Training, expressed similar sentiments and urged all countries to support Taiwan’s engagement.
According to the MOFA, as a responsible member of the global community, Taiwan will continue to work with allies and like-minded partners to make positive contributions and address climate change. (YCH-E)
