Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi led a delegation to the Halifax International Security Forum held Nov. 21-23 in Canada.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chen participated in an evening panel entitled “Artificial Advantages: China’s Intelligent Approach.” He also gave interviews to media outlets such as the U.S.-based PBS News, the Canadian Cable Public Affairs Channel, and the Toronto-based daily newspaper The Globe and Mail.

Chen said in the interviews that Taiwan is committed to enhancing its self-defense capabilities and whole-of-society resilience, and is determined to maintain cross-strait peace and stability. He shared observations on the political and security risks that stem from authoritarian regimes, and praised the technology and economic cooperation between Taiwan and Canada.

The deputy minister also held meetings with parliamentarians from around the world to discuss topics like democratic partnerships and investment and supply chain cooperation. The politicians, from countries including Canada, Germany, and the U.S., agreed that strengthening economic and trade exchanges is the key to deepening Taiwan-Europe relations, and reaffirmed their continued support of Taiwan.

Chen’s presence at the Halifax forum demonstrates Taiwan’s crucial role in safeguarding global democracy and regional peace, the MOFA said, adding that the country will continue to work with like-minded partners to counter authoritarian expansion, raise its profile and contribute even more to the international community.

The Halifax International Security Forum was first held in 2009 to bring together senior government officials, congressional leaders and strategic experts from democratic countries to address global security issues. Taiwan has participated in the event since 2018, and former President Tsai Ing-wen delivered a speech last year as the winner of the 2020 John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service. (YCH-E)
