Taiwan, Hong Kong to expand bilateral cooperation

June 03, 2009
Hong Kong’s Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Stephen Lam Sui-lung, will visit Taiwan June 5 for talks on forming organizations to promote bilateral cooperation and boost exchanges in the fields of economics, trade and culture. Mainland Affairs Council officials said June 2 that Deputy Minister Fu Don-cheng will hold talks with Lam on bilateral cooperation and exchanges, hoping to reach common ground on these issues. Lam is also expected to meet MAC Minister Lai Shin-yuan and to inspect the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s new Taipei office during his stay. According to Fu, both sides believe it is necessary to establish exchange platforms in each other’s territory. The MAC said that during Fu’s March visit to Hong Kong at the invitation of the special administrative region’s government, details concerning the possibility of setting up designated offices had been discussed. Fu, who is in charge of Hong Kong and Macau affairs for the MAC, said Taiwan’s office would be known as the “Taiwan, Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce and Culture” and Hong Kong’s, the “Hong Kong, Taiwan Joint Committee on Economy and Trade.”
